Walter Schlicher

October 27, 1954 — September 24, 2010

Walter Raymond Schlicher Walter Raymond Schlicher of Lewiston, MI, passed into eternal life on September 24, 2010. He was born on October 27, 1954, in Fort Carson, CO. He was the son of Royce and Mary (Dieckman) Schlicher, formerly of Atlanta, MI, who preceded him in death. His childhood was spent on the family farm in Vienna Township, and he lived his adult life with his wife Lori and their four daughters in Lewiston. Walter graduated from Johannesburg-Lewiston Schools in 1972 and from Michigan State University in 1976 with a degree in animal husbandry. He was employed at Garland Golf Course in Lewiston for nearly 40 years as an irrigation specialist and golf course superintendent. Family, faith, and community were at the heart of Walt's life. He married Lori (Kline) Schlicher on July 20, 1985. Together they raised four daughters - Erin, Layne, Mary, and Abby. Walt lived for his daughters and spent most of his free time shooting hoops or playing catch with them. Their accomplishments made him extremely proud. Walt was active in the community as an 8th grade basketball coach, Little League coach, and girls' soccer coach. He was a long-time parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Lewiston. He was also an avid gardener and bee keeper. In addition to his family, Walt leaves behind four sisters, two brothers and their families: Sharon (Carson) Nichol of Golden Valley, AZ; Karen Schlicher of Big Bay, MI; Stephen (Susan) Schlicher of Granville, OH; Col. Michael Schlicher of San Antonio, TX; Elizabeth (Glen) Woodbury of Monterey, CA; and Catherine (Bert) Horiuchi of Kapolei, HI. Walt had many cousins and was very close to his wife's family. Funeral arrangements were made through Green Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Francis Church on September 28. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Schlicher family to be put toward the girls' college education.
