On Sep 27th, 2024, Vernon (Pee-Wee) Lyle Klein, 95 of Atlanta, Michigan died peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Onaway, Michigan on November 27th, 1928, to late Edward and Pearl Klein. He has resided in Atlanta for all but a couple of years in the fifties when he moved to Goodrich, Michigan to learn his trade, building. Vernon grew up in the Atlanta area and was a graduate of Atlanta High School, class of 1947. Vernon married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Mowery on June 2nd, 1951. Vernon centered his world around family. Vernon was a builder/contractor mainly within Montmorency County area and numerous other areas in Michigan and other states. Chances are if you had a house built in the area or work done on your home, Vernon did it. He completed over 250 homes and buildings in his over 70 years of building. He started the Klein Family Market downtown and managed it for 2 years. In his early days, he was a great baseball player for numerous Atlanta teams. Vernon was also a golfer later in life and enjoyed golfing locally and in his winter home in Bonita Springs Florida. There, he also continued his love for the game of baseball and played well into his eighties. Vernon started a hobby of flying a plane in the seventies. This soon became a passion. He flew every chance he had and was more than thrilled to take anyone up for a spin that was interested. Vernon was a fixture in the Atlanta area all his life. He served on the Atlanta school board, was a Mason, an Eagle member and helped the town in anyway needed. He donated his time to build the case for the stuffed elk in front of the Post Office. Vernon never met a stranger. He will be missed in this community. He leaves behind countless memories and his undying love.
Vernon is survived by 6 children, Mike (Jean) Klein; Greg (Debbie) Klein; Amy (Joe) Soncrainte all of Atlanta; Tammy (Bill) Honey of Clarkston; Rick (Nichole) Klein of Murphy, NC; Matt Klein of Waterford; daughter-in-law, Shari Klein of Hillman with 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn and son, Tom Klein.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial held in celebration of Vernon’s life at 12:00 PM on Saturday, November 09, 2024, at Green Funeral Home, Atlanta. Visitation will take place from 11:00 AM until time of service at noon. A luncheon immediately following at The Atlanta Eagles. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Michigan, 199 Long Rapids Rd, Alpena Michigan 49707 or Atlanta Eagles 4077.
