Mrs. Velma Ruth Benac, 100 of Chesaning, Michigan; formerly of Hillman, died peacefully at Chesaning Comfort Care on August 18, 2020. She was born on April 26, 1920 to Albert and Ethel Maude (Sample) Beauregard in Loud Township, Michigan. She was a twin to Wilma Benac who preceded her in death on August 12, 2019. Velma graduated from Hillman High School in 1937 and Montmorency County Normal in 1938. She taught for six years. On February 14, 1946 she married, Harold Benac. They moved around Michigan as Harold did road construction. In 1957 they returned to Hillman. Velma started substituting at the Hillman Post Office and became postmaster soon after.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Leslie (Dale) Wendling of Chesaning; stepdaughter, Sandra (Ken) Cochone of Jacksonville, Florida; sister-in-law, Darlene Yarch of Alpena; many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Ethel Maude Beauregard; husband, Harold A. Benac; and brothers and sisters, Milford (Ethel) Beauregard; Howard (Pauline) Beauregard; Holly (Jim) Cameron; Kathleen (Dennis) Wade; Leafa (Archie) Wilson; Wilma (Wes) Benac; Ernest (Helen) Rea; Ervin (Mildred) Benac; Walt (Irene) Benac; Willis (Phyllis) Benac; and Mariette Benac.
Funeral services for Mrs. Benac will take place at 1:00 PM on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at Green Funeral Home, Hillman; Marsha Marquardt officiating. Visitation will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Green Funeral Home, Hillman from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Sunday from noon until time of service. Velma will be laid to rest at Hillman Rust Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hillman Fire Department or EMS.
