Theodore Podewil Jr.

Theodore (Ted) Walter Podewil, Jr. Theodore (Ted) Walter Podewil, Jr. of Lewiston, MI, formerly of Ann Arbor, MI, passed away July 5, 2018. Ted was born on May 5, 1934, to Theodore W. Podewil, Sr. and Ruth V. Godden (both deceased), and grew up in Ann Arbor. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joanne (Herman) and their three children, Becky (Gary) Hurst of Plymouth, Michigan, Ted III (Brenda) Podewil of West Columbia, South Carolina, and Monte Podewil of Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Theodore (Walter) Podewil IV, Glenn Podewil, Erin Corley, Kyla (Edwin) Cruz, and Cory (Nadiana) Hurst; and three great-grandchildren, Gael Hurst, Holli Crawford, and Preston Crawford. Ted worked for many years as a Washtenaw County Deputy Sheriff. He was a member of the National Sheriff's Association. He also worked part-time for the Dexter Police Department in Michigan. He retired from Catherine McCauley Health Center (St. Joseph Mercy Hospital) after 28 years, serving as Director of Communications and Security Services. He was instrumental in the creation of the Security Department for the hospital at both the North Ingalls facility and the "new" hospital on Huron River Drive. Part of Ted's work responsibilities included the Mercywood location on Jackson Ave. As part of his work, Ted was a member of Greater Detroit Association for Hospital Security Directors, the Great Lakes Chapter of the International Association for Hospital Security, and the Michigan Parking Association. He also served on the Washtenaw County Law Enforcement and Industrial Security Association. During his years at the hospital, Ted also served on the Citizens Advisory Council for Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital. Ted spent his retirement in Lewiston, MI where he was a member of the 45th Parallel No. 581, Masonic Lodge of Lewiston. As a Mason, he was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation in 2007 and was awarded the Mason of the Year for 2007. In 2008, he was honored as the District Mason of the Year. Ted was extremely proud of his years and service in the Masons. Ted was also a member of the American Legion Post 198 of Lewiston, MI. He also belonged to the Order of the Eagles in Comins, MI, and a former member of Aerie 4216 Ocala Forest, Silver Springs, FL. Ted served proudly in the Michigan Army National Guard as Sergeant First Class during the period of 1951-1960 (Korea/Vietnam Era) in Company K, 125th Infantry Regiment. His interests included the history of World War II, stock car racing, playing pool, and working in the woods. A memorial will be planned for a later date.
