Thelma Sawyer

November 11, 1925 — June 23, 2015

Thelma Ruby Sawyer Mrs. Thelma Ruby Sawyer, 89, of Lewiston, Michigan died on June 23, 2015 at Hillman Haven. She was born to the late, Gordon and Ruby (Proper) King in Albert Township, Michigan on November 11, 1925. To complete her high school education, Thelma lived with a family in Grayling where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. She also attended Central Michigan University. She married Thomas Sawyer and together they raised six children. Whether it was farming, logging, or the insurance business, the couple always worked together as a team. Education and children were always very important to Thelma and she worked as a 4-H leader for many years, as well as a cub scout leader for Boy Scouts. She was instrumental in the consolidation between the Johannesburg and Lewiston schools and served on the school board, always being an advocate for the students. Thelma was a driving force and tireless worker for the development of the Lewiston Historical Society, which is now in other capable hands. Her hobbies included; reading, gardening, and walking. She is survived by her children, Marilyn (John) Brown of Lewiston; Gary Sawyer of Moab, Utah; Jerome Sawyer of Georgia; Teresa (Hans) Shwarz of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Gregory (Cathy) Sawyer of Good Friday Harbor, Washington; grandsons, Jason (Rachel) Putnam of Maine; Clayton (Chere) Putnam of Seattle; Thomas (Jennifer) Brown of St. Louis, Missouri; great-grandsons, Angus Putnam, Ivan Putnam, and Henry Putnam; and brother, Douglas King of Lewiston. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Ruby King; husband, Thomas Sawyer; daughter, Jeannie Putnam; sister, Lyllis Pitts; and brother, Sanderson King. As were her wishes, cremation has taken place and there are no services planned for Mrs. Sawyer at this time. If anyone wishes to do something in her memory the family has suggested donations to the Lewiston Historical Society.
