Mr. Sherman Dewey Ellis, 89, of Lewiston, Michigan passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family on October 4, 2020. He was born in Rose City, Michigan to the late Richard and Alice (Booth) Ellis on October 21, 1930. Dewey and his siblings were raised in Mio, Michigan. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. While roller skating one day, he met Lillian Newell and they were married soon after on June 24, 1956. The newlyweds moved to Lewiston and went on to celebrate 64 years together before his passing. Dewey served as postmaster for the United States Postal Service in Lewiston until his retirement in 1989. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 6335 and a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Lewiston. In his younger years, Dewey enjoyed bird and deer hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, and playing poker with friends. He enjoyed watching sports on television and reading countless mystery novels. His favorite hobby was taking trips to northern Michigan casinos with Lillian. Above everything, Dewey valued his time spent with family. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lillian Ellis of Lewiston; daughters, Carolyn Ellis of Lewiston; Marilyn Ellis of Old Greenwich, Connecticut; son, Roger Ellis (Pam Stefani) of Lewiston; grandchildren, Scott Ellis of Bay City, Roger Ellis of Redford, and Allison (John) VanCoillie of Lewiston; brother, Lyle Ellis of Mio; sister, Frances Stutesman of Mio; brother, Daniel Ellis of Mio; brother, Cyril “Joe” Ellis of Texas; sister, Rosemary (Russ) Hoffman of Mio; and daughter-in-law, Amber Orm of Atlanta. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Alice Ellis; and siblings, Alice Ellis; Faith Gennick; Beverly Gennick; Frank Ellis; David Ellis; and Douglas Ellis.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside service will take place on Friday, October 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the Albert Township Cemetery in Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dewey’s name to Congregational United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 282, Lewiston, MI 49756.
