Ronald Frederick Otto Mr. Ronald Frederick Otto, 73 of Punta Gorda, FL passed away at his home on December 22, 2011. He was born to Herman and Hildegard (Limberg) Otto on February 22, 1938 in Detroit, MI. He moved to Lewiston permanently in 1986 from West Branch, having had a cabin up north since the 50s. He was the owner operator of Garland Resort, which he purchased from his mother and operated for twenty-three years. With passion and vision he rebuilt Garland from ashes, constantly evolving and striving to create a special environment his for guests to relax and enjoy. Ron was not just an avid golfer, he enjoyed hunting and fishing whether in the Rocky Mountains or the marshes of Wolf Island, collecting trophy's from all over the world. Over the years he built several ships and sailed from places like the Panama Canal, Caribbean Islands, Nova Scotia and the Great Lakes. A world traveler, he visited every continent but he still had dreams of trekking through Patagonia in South America. Having an artist's eye he loved to photograph his travels and nature and even dabbled in drawing and painting. He was also a frequent skier at Sheridan Valley as a young man and then the Swiss Alps later in life. Above everything, he enjoyed time spent with family and friends. He is survived his long time companion Heather McIntyre of Punta Gorda, FL. And by his daughters, Ursula (Barry) Owens and Katrin Otto, both of Lewiston, MI; son, Ron Otto of Madrid, Spain; grandchildren, Mark, Jessie, Gunnar, Micha, Max; and He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Otto and sister, Eleanor Kopp. As were his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in his honor on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Green Funeral Home, Lewiston, MI; Reverend Jim McIntyre officiating. Services will begin at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested any contributions should be made to local college scholarship funds, that Ron always supported.
