Oral Nelson McMurphy Mr. Oral Nelson McMurphy, 98 of Atlanta, Michigan died on March 19, 2018 at Hillman Haven. He was born in Avery Township, Michigan on September 14, 1919 to the late, James and Nettie (Ferguson) McMurphy. As a veteran of the United States Army he served his country proudly during World War II. He married the late, Arvella "Sis" McMurphy on December 6, 1947 in Atlanta and together the couple celebrated 65 years of marriage before her passing in September of 2013. Oral resided in Atlanta all of his life and farmed for many years. He worked as the director for Social Services before retiring in 1981 after 25 years on the job. He was a member of the Atlanta Congregational Church, the Masonic Lodge 516, the VFW Post 9489, and the Atlanta Senior Center where he was active in the construction of the building. He had a passion for woodworking and loved to cut wood and did so until he was told he no longer could. Oral also enjoyed stone work with Eldon Dobbyn. He liked to travel in his motor home all over the world clear to Alaska and visited Ireland with his sister on his last big trip. Family was valuable in Oral's life and he cherished the time he spent with them. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his son, David (Carol) McMurphy of Atlanta; daughters, Janet (Dennis) Davis of Atlanta; Joyce (Jeffrey) Elsea of Alma; Judith (Don) Williamson of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brother, Jack (Lena) McMurphy of Atlanta; and sister, Gladys Meston of Grand Haven. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nettie McMurphy; wife, Arvella "Sis;" brothers, Doug and Irvin; and sisters, Alice Tripp; Marie Cross; and Hazel Teets. As were his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a memorial held in celebration of Mr. McMurphy's life at 12:00PM on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Green Funeral Home; Atlanta. Visitation will take place from 10:00AM until time of service.
