Joyce Arlene Webber Briley Joyce Arlene Webber Briley was born to Ira and Olive Webber, on May 14, 1929 at home in Vienna Township. She attended Johannesburg Public School most of her childhood except for a few years when the family lived in Big Bay, Michigan. She graduated from Johannesburg High School in 1947, attended Montmorency County Normal at Hillman Michigan in preparation to teach. She taught at a one-room school in Saranac Michigan, near Ionia for one year before she married Gordon Briley. Gordon had an airplane and a landing strip and hanger on his dairy farm at Hetherton Michigan, and flew down to Ionia to court Joyce during her teaching year. They were married at the Webber Farm on June 6, of 1949. Nine children were born to this marriage, Curtis in San Antonio, TX, Crystal Boman Briley of Cheboygan, Barton of Johannesburg, Victor (Wendy) of Johannesburg, Colleen (Michael) Marvin of Kalamazoo, Lois (Scot) McKinnon of Bay City, Arlin (Helen) of St. Petersburg, FL, Clinton of Johannesburg, and Mitchell (Carol) of Johannesburg. Joyce belonged to the Michigan Home Extension for over thirty years. She also was a 4-H leader and Local Farm Bureau member. The farm duties of milking of the cows, raising a garden, keeping the books, and feeding the calves along with her family duties kept her busy and active. Joyce had been ill for several months, and was determined to be at home in her last moments, and died January 11, 2007 at home. She is survived by her nine children and their spouses and 24 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, her sisters, Mildred Thompson Wolf of Johannesburg, Viola Harlow (Reginald) Flack of South Lyon, Chloe (William) Cox of Elkhart, IN, Patricia (Robert) Cox of Yucca Valley, CA, and Virginia Stutesman of Gaylord. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Gordon, her parents Ira and Olive Webber, a sister Doris Baumgartner, 4 brothers, Ira S. Webber Jr., twins Donald and Daniel Webber and an infant brother, Owen Charles Webber. A memorial, open to family and friends will be held at the Vienna Township Hall, followed by a luncheon on Sunday, January 14, 2007, 1 PM. A private burial for family will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2007, 1 PM. She will be transported from her Centennial farm by a horse-drawn wagon, to be buried with her husband at the Hetherton Cemetery on Meridian Line Road, a short distance from the Centennial Farm. She will be sadly missed by all. A lilac bush may be planted at your choice of location in memory of Joyce, or monetary donations may be made to Hospice of Michigan, Gaylord Michigan
