Janet Smith

Mrs. Janet Marie Smith, or commonly known as, “Janet the mail lady,” died peacefully at Medilodge of Hillman on June 23, 2022 at the age of 61 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Onaway, Michigan on February 8, 1961 to Sam and Mary Tennant. She has resided in Atlanta for the last 20+ years. In 2008, Janet married her husband, Mark Smith and together the couple celebrated 14 years of marriage before her passing. Janet worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for over 20 years. She was the past president in 2010 of the Lewiston Fun Ones, and a member of the VFW Post 9489 and the Millersburg Eagles. Janet loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping and riding her four-wheeler. She was an avid quilter and made many beautiful quilts over the years. She also had a very giving heart. Each year she would bake several dozen cookies and distribute them all throughout Montmorency County through Christmas and New Year’s. One year she baked and gifted 92 pies alone. Janet is and will be missed.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Smith; numerous children and grandchildren; siblings, Pat Watson and Steve Tennant; and many numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mary Tennant, and sister, Diane.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. The family has chosen to remember Janet privately at this time per her wishes.
