James Burris

March 30, 1922 — April 13, 2009

James Howard Burris James Howard Burris, 87, of Oscoda, MI, formerly of Atlanta, MI, passed away on April 13, 2009 at his residence. He was born on March 30, 1922 to L.G. and Alice (Stanton) Burris in Flint, MI. After graduating from high school, Jim joined the United Conservation Corps before entering the Army during WWII, where he served at the Battle of the Bulge. He worked as a tool and die maker for many years, retiring in 1998. He was a quite a sportsman, he loved to hunt and fish with his children. Jim was a jack of all trades and was very adventuresome. He dabbled in gold mining out west, and he and a friend bought a sail boat and sailed throughout the Caribbean even though neither had ever sailed before. Jim is survived by his wife, Doris of Oscoda; daughter, Leslie Horwitz of Livonia, MI; two sons, Rodney, of Alpena, MI, and Anthony of Livonia, MI; three stepchildren, Daniel (Amelia) Stevens of Marquette, MI, Dawn Lee of Georgia, and Charles Stevens of Cadillac, MI; sister Barbara (Sam) Veach of Nevada; brother, Jack Burris of Arizona; and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, James; brothers, Fred and Norman; and a sister Betty Anderson. As were his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at 11:00 AM at the Big Rock Congregational Church, Pastor Brian Tidd and Pastor Roger Steele officiating. A luncheon will be held immediately afterward at the church. Interment and Military Honors will be provided at Briley Twp Cemetery at 1:30 PM that afternoon by the Atlanta VFW Post.
