Henry Waterkamp

Henry Waterkamp Mr. Henry Waterkamp, 84 of Atlanta, Michigan passed away on April 10, 2014 at Alpena Regional Medical Center. He was born in Clinton, Iowa to the late, Hendrick and Tiela (VanDerMark) Waterkamp on September 20, 1929. He served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps serving during the Korean War. On September 4, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan he married his loving wife, Natalie (Sprague) Waterkamp and together they celebrated 62 years of marriage before his passing. Henry graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor's degree and then went on to Wayne State University to graduate with a Master's degree, both in education. In 1986 after 30+ years of teaching he retired from Dearborn Schools. In 1988 the couple moved from Livonia to Atlanta. Henry was a member of the Headwaters Land Conservancy and past president of the Avery Lake Property Owners Association. He was also a member of the Conservation District in Montmorency County and the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. When he wasn't teaching, Henry loved to work on cars. He enjoyed to be outdoors fishing and camping and also enjoyed walks with his son's dog, Blondie and old dog, Taco. Above all, he enjoyed his time spent with family and friends and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Natalie Waterkamp of Atlanta; son, Mark (Terri) Waterkamp of Garden City; daughter, Natalie Baeckeroot of Pleasant Ridge; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Gary (Jeanette) Waterkamp of Edwardsburg; and sister, Tiela Slajer of Holland. He was preceded in death by his son, Henry "Buddy" Waterkamp, parents, Hendrick and Tiela Waterkamp; and two sisters, Olga Huisman and Harriet DeGraaff. A visitation service will be held for Mr. Waterkamp from 11:00-7:00PM on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Green Funeral Home; Atlanta, Michigan. Interment will take place at a later date at Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills, MI. The family has suggested memorials to the Elk Country Animal Shelter, PO Box 434, Atlanta, MI 49709.
