Gretchen Rose Newton Gretchen Rose Newton, age 89, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, June 17, 2018. Gretchen was born on June 28, 1928, in Dexter, MI to George and Henrietta (Luckhardt) Steeb. On Nov. 3, 1973, Gretchen married Robert S. Newton. She is survived by her husband and their children, Jan Sodt (Paul Allen), Carol (Joe) Joyce, Cathy (Corky) Broadway, Phoenix (Debby) Sodt, Bob (Katie) Newton, Jim (Kathy) Sodt, 13 grand children, 16 great grandchildren and also sisters Grace (Gus) Lindemann, and AliceMae (Homer) Bruneau, as well as many special nieces and nephews. She retired from Lewiston School after working many years with the children of Lewiston. She and her husband had a great love for children and showed it through their work at the family business, Bob's Corner, serving ice cream to the community as well as providing jobs for many of the community youth. She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ and played piano. She enjoyed many activities with her loving and caring husband, such as daily walks in the woods, watching the reflections on the lake as well as the wildlife around her home. They enjoyed attending numerous Johannesburg-Lewiston school sporting events and band concerts. She was preceded in death by her first husband Emanuel J. Sodt, her son John Sodt, and a brother, Raymond Steeb. There will be no memorial service at her request. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan, 830 S. Otsego Ave., Gaylord, or the Congregational United Church of Christ of Lewiston.
