Glen Reed

June 6, 1943 — June 12, 2020

Hillman

Mr. Glen Reed, 77 of Hillman, Michigan, formerly of Livonia, died the evening of June 12, 2020 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey from complications of a heart procedure. He was born in Pentwater, Michigan on June 6, 1943, the baby of seven children, to the late, Perry and Maggie (Woodford) Reed. Glen proudly served in the United States Army for three years before settling into civilian life in the Detroit area. On June 23, 1995 Glen married his wife, Sharon Zawalski, and together they celebrated almost 25 years of marriage. Glen was a self-taught "Jack of all Trades" and worked in several different fields to support himself and then his first wife, Diane, and their two children. His love of working on automobiles finally led him to a 25 year career with UPS, first as a mechanic and later a manager over the automotive department at various UPS facilities in the Detroit area. He was fortunate enough to enjoy 25 years of retirement during which he realized his dream of building his own home in Hillman, operated his own portable sawmill for many years, took up woodturning and eventually was able to have fun with Model A cars he always wanted to own. Over the years in Hillman, he was a member of the Montmorency County Conservation Club, the Hillman Lions, the Kirtland Warbler Audubon Society and was named the 2018 Hillman citizen of the year. Glen loved his country and the American flag and was very proud to have established the Glen and Sharon Reed Hillman Flag Fund through the Northeast Michigan Foundation in Alpena in honor of the service given by two of his brothers, his son, his stepdaughter and her husband, and three of his grandsons. This fund will ensure that the beautiful flag will forever be able to wave at the foot of the hill in front of the VFW Hall.

Glen is survived by his loving wife, Sharon of Hillman; daughter, Rhonda (Ron) Fadoir of Redford; son, Christopher Reed of Plymouth; stepchildren, Kimberly (Jim) VanTassel of Lodi, California; William Zawalski of Sterling Heights; Michael (Sarah) Zawalski of Troy. He greatly loved when his grandchildren visited and he will be missed by Margaret, Alexander, William Jr (Shelby), Anthony, Megan, Matthew, Ellie, Ezra, Sadie, and Vaughn. Glen was very proud when he became a great-grandpa to Peyton. His sister, Wanda (Ted) Jeffries of New Era; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Glen was cremated following organ and tissue donations through the Gift of Life organization. A memorial service will be planned for a later date at New Beginnings Ministries, Hillman. On behalf of Sharon Reed and their children, we sincerely appreciate and acknowledge all the phone calls and words of condolence received. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation, please consider one of the following: The Glen and Sharon Reed Flag Fund, Boystown of Nebraska, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
