Garnet Tripp Garnet Tripp, 78, of Hillman, MI, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Alpena Regional Medical Center. He was born on August 23, 1930 to James and Alice Tripp in Hillman, MI. He graduated from Hillman High School and attended County Normal. He married the former Florence Miller on February 17, 1951. In March of 1952, Garnet was drafted into the United States Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged from the military, he earned a bachelors degree from Central Michigan University, then went on to earn a masters degree in education from Michigan State University. He taught school in Hillman from 1956 until 1988. During his time in Hillman, Garnet served in the village government, including village president from 1962 until 1992. In retirement, he worked part time for Widell Industry. In 2004, he earned the title of Michigan Outstanding Older Worker from Experience Works Inc. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America for over 34 years. Garnet was always active in both community and church affairs. He has been a member of the Hillman United Methodist Church, Montmorency County Historical Society, Methodist Men's Club, and a volunteer for the Hillman Fire Department and Ambulance service. Garnet is survived by his wife, Florence; children, Sally (Allen) King of Hillman, MI, Nancy (Dennis) Delnay of Norton, OH, Mary (Jim) Sullivan of Waterford, MI, and John (Sara) Tripp of Kentwood, MI; four grandchildren, Allen, Dana, Denise, and Matthew; and sisters, Eleanor Lutze of Hillman, and Yvonne (Gary) DeRosia of Alpena, MI. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen. Funeral services for Mr Tripp will be held on Friday, January 2, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Hillman United Methodist Church, Pastor Donald Derby officiating. Interment will take place in the Spring at Hillman/Rust Twp Cemetery. Visitation hours will be held on Thursday, from 4-9 PM at the church. The family has suggested memorials to the Hillman United Methodist Church, Thunderhead Boy Scouts Troop 81, the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan, or to any charity of the donor's choice.
