Dr. Elven E. Duvall CHAMPION OF FREE PUBLIC EDUCATION, ONE OF "THOSE TWO GUYS" Elven Edward Duvall, 91, of Atlanta, MI, known to friends and family as "Duve", born August 3, 1921 in Charleston, Missouri to Elven and Alma (Humphreys) Duvall, died at his home in Atlanta, MI on September 1, 2012 with his family gathered around him. He attended Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) where he joined Kappa Phi Alpha fraternity. There, also, he met his wife of 68-years, Jane Ellen Lindner. He served in World War II with the Army Air Force as Radio Operator on the crew of a B24 Liberator bomber in Italy. He and his crew flew 38 missions over Austria and Germany. As an enlisted man, Duve earned the rank of Master Sergeant. After the war Duve returned to Eastern Michigan University with the help of the G.I. Bill and earned his BS in 1947 with a teaching certificate. Elven then dedicated his life to free public education for American children. He earned his MA degree from the University of Michigan in 1949 and his doctoral degree in School Administration from Columbia University in New York City, 1957. Duve began his long career in public education in Tecumseh, Michigan where he was a science teacher, the Coach and Athletic Director. He moved his family to Addison, Michigan where he was High School Principal and then Superintendent. He was recruited to Lansing by then State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Rolland Strolley, as a consultant for school consolidation and reorganization. Duve's next move was to Western Michigan University where he was an Assistant Professor of School Administration and Finance. He was recruited to Grosse Pointe, Michigan as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and then to Jackson, Michigan as Superintendent of K-12 public schools, Jackson Community College and the public libraries. Dr. Harold Sponberg, President of EMU, recruited Duve to Eastern Michigan University as a full professor to develop the Department of Educational Administration and Leadership. At Eastern Michigan University Duve taught graduate classes in school administration. He designed the requirements and supervised the graduate administrative internship. He designed and was Executive Director of the Michigan Congress of School Administrator Associations with the goal to advocate for all children with a united voice. He designed and administered the Educational Forum, which was the collaboration between the Parent Teacher Association, Michigan Association of School Boards, American Federation of Teachers, Michigan Education Association, League of Women Voters, and the Chambers of Commerce. He combined the Congress and the Forum to form the Education Alliance, which established the Michigan Education Hall of Fame. During this time his graduate assistant was Mike Flannagan, the current Michigan Superintendent of Public Instruction. Duve worked with the Michigan Association of School Boards to design its first training in school "boardsmanship." He served on two U.S. State Department missions to review educational systems in each country of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and in Japan. He was President of Eastern Michigan University Alumni Association under EMU President Dr. Eugene Elliot. He served as President of Michigan Parent Teacher Association. Duve lobbied in both Lansing and Washington D.C. as an advocate for children and public education. He received many awards and honors throughout his illustrious career including: Nesbit Scholar, Columbia University (NYC); Full Professor, EMU; Inductee Michigan Education Hall of Fame; Professor Emeritus, EMU; Inductee Hall of Honor, College of Education, Department of Leadership & Counseling, EMU. He and his wife retired to Northern Michigan in 1979. Although he was in retirement, Duve served the Northern Michigan community. He was President of Alpena Child & Family Services, President of Briley Township Board of Review, Agricultural Superintendent for the Montmorency County 4-H Fair, helped establish the Atlanta Elk Festival, and assisted at the local dog sled races. School kids knew Duve and his lifelong friend Gerald Weier as "Those Two Guys" who attended every boys and girls sporting event both home and away. Duve and Gerry adopted a highway near Manier Road along M32 where clean up was a bi-annual event for family and friends. Duve was preceded in death by his parents, Elven and Alma (Humphreys) Duvall, brothers Richard and Donald Duvall, and sisters Aleene (Duvall) Wells and Jayne (Duvall) Klavanian. He is survived by his wife Jane Ellen (Lindner) Duvall, brother Marshall Duvall, sisters-in-law Carol Duvall and Gina Duvall and many nieces and nephews. His children also survive him; all are educators, both active and retired: Linda Duvall, Saline, MI, Jane (Duvall) Bennett, Missoula, MT, Sara Duvall and her husband Stewart Gordon (Ann Arbor, MI), Elven "Buster" Duvall III, Leland, MI, and Mary Ann Duvall, Harrison, MI Grand Children: Elven "Socco" Duvall IV and his wife Lourdes, Washington D.C., Gordon Bennett, Zihuatanejo, Mexico, Daniel Bennett, Bonner, MT, James Duvall, Atlanta, MI, and Ian Duvall, Leland, MI Great Grandchildren; Ferris, Maya, and Ira Buzzy Bennett, Jack, Tavo, and Katherine Duvall Daughters of his heart: Abby Currier, Ann Arbor, MI and Karen Bolton, Harrison, MI Duve was cremated and will be interred at the family plot in Utica, MI at a future date.
