Dorothy Marguerite Peterson (maiden name Sabourin) who was born 100 years ago in April, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 31 near the home where she was raised on the Thunder Bay River in Hillman Michigan. Her daughter and son-in-law were by her side. She was a beloved mother to Carol A. Barnes and her husband Michael A. Barnes of Williamston Michigan, a beloved grandmother to Spencer P. Barnes (Kimberly) of Hastings Michigan, Dane A. Barnes (Talia) of New York City, and a loving great grandmother to Dane B. Barnes, Brianna Barnes, Hannah Barnes and Noah Barnes. We will all miss her dearly.
Dorothy was married to Dane E. Peterson for 52 years before his death in 1994. She taught in a one room schoolhouse after completing County Normal teacher training, then joined Dane as co-owner and manager of Peterson’s General Store in Atlanta Michigan until her retirement in 1973. In her retirement Dorothy enjoyed her many friends and family and was an avid golfer and reader.
Civic life in post, World War II Atlanta was busy, and she was an active member in several organizations including The Lions Club Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary among others. Dorothy was a steadfast member of several area Catholic churches in Lewiston, Hillman and most recently Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Atlanta.
