David Gouin

David J. Gouin David J Gouin, 76, of Atlanta, MI, departed this Earth July 7, 2011 at Alpena Regional Medical Center. He was born to Leonard "Hop" and Helen (Olson) Gouin on March 18, 1935 in Cheboygan, MI at his grandmothers's house on Harrison Avenue. David worked for the State of Michigan Department of Transportation for 38 years, starting with the ferry service at the Straits of Mackinac. He retired from the Highway Department in Alpena in 1993 as supervisor of District 4. David graduated from Cheboygan High School with the Class of 1952. After graduation, he and a classmate worked on a barge down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, then hitch hiked back to Cheboygan. He was a trapper, loved fishing, hunting, and gardening. He was an avid knife collector, belonging to many knife collectors clubs, the NKCA, WKCC, Marble + Knife Club, the Indian Knife Club, and the Gator Club of Plant City, FL. He and his wife, Lena, travelled to many shows in KY, TN, PA, OH, FL and in MI. He also traveled to Maine and the Pacific Ocean, visited relatives in Oregon, Washington State, and San Francisco, CA. They wintered in Haines City Florida, where David played and sang with the band, going to different parks in the area to entertain the senior retirees. David is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lena (Ostwald) Gouin of Atlanta, MI; sons, David (Debbie) of Atlanta, and Donald (Rebecca) of Fife Lake, MI; daughters, Dorothy (Andrew) Abraham of Mesick, MI, and Denise Kelley of Kingsley, MI; grandchildren, Tim, Greg, Raymond, Shannon, Daniel, Lena, Maura, Makala, Bethiah, Jacob, and Kristi; great grandchildren, Lucien, Breanna, Michael, Gazette, and Drew. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Douglas, grandson Joseph, brother Joseph, and a sister Phylis DeMercurio. Funeral services for Mr Gouin will be held on July 12, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Green Funeral Home, Atlanta, MI, Pastor Ginny Titus officiating. Interment will take place at Briley Twp Cemetery.
