Daniel J. Braun Sr, 82, passed away suddenly at Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord, Michigan on January 28, 2025. He was born on February 3, 1942 to Harry and Vera (Draschil) Braun. Dan was welcomed into Heaven with outstretched arms by his late son, Michael. He graduated from Thomas M. Cooley High School in Detroit and went on to attend Mercy College to study applied psychology, criminal psychology, and sociology. After college he enlisted in the United States Army and served as military police from September 1961 to September 1963. After his honorable discharge from the military, Dan began working in April of 1964 for the Detroit Police Department. He worked various jobs within the Department including Vice, Narcotics, Liquor, Traffic, Riot Control, Public Relations, and working with juveniles. He retired in July 1974. From February 1975 to September 1976, Dan worked for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He worked in the woods grooming snowmobile trails, doing camp surveillance, and oversaw teenage youth conservation groups in the Summer. He was also co-founder of Thunder Bay Sanitation in Montmorency County. Dan then went to work for the Montmorency County Sheriff’s Department as undersheriff before being elected as sheriff from 1988-1997, when he retired. Upon his retirement from Montmorency County, Dan went to work at Tru Tech Systems, Inc as manager of their Lewiston branch, and finally retired for good after approximately six years. When Dan wasn’t working, he enjoyed raising animals on his hobby farm, especially polled-Hereford (he raised the best tasting beef!). He was a former 4-H leader and also involved with his community as president of the Atlanta Community Schools Board of Education and charter member of Atlanta Thunder Bay Eagles 4077 and Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church. He is and will be deeply missed.
Dan is remembered by his loving wife of 58 years, Lucille Braun; children, Yvette Moore, Yvonne Olshove, Daniel J. Braun Jr; siblings, Louise Squires and Barry Braun; grandchildren, Erica (Alex) Kaspo, Brandyn Braun, Lauren Braun, Heather Braun, Anastasia Braun, Kristina Braun, Kerrigan (Trent) Sweeney, Kody Braun, Kutler Braun; great-grandchildren, Isaac Kaspo and Gideon Kaspo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry C. Sr and Vera Braun; father-in-law, Jaraldo Rondan; mother-in-law, Lucy Rondan; son, Michael Braun; brother-in-law, Stanley Squires; and faithful companion, Blaze.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a Mass of Christian burial held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Lewiston; Fr. Scott Lawler officiating. Visitation will take place from 10:00 AM until time of Mass with military funeral honors following. Inurnment will take place at Briley Township Cemetery, Atlanta.
