Benny Dunbar Mr. Benny Dunbar, 85 of Johannesburg, MI passed away on Friday, October 7, 2011 in Petoskey, MI. He was born on July 18, 1926 in Alma, MI to Benjamin and Bertha (Walters) Dunbar. He joined the Navy in 1944 and was a Fireman First Class aboard a naval mine sweeper in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Benny married Elenore Jermoloicz Wobrock in 1965. He and Elenore and her children lived in Southeast Michigan for several years before returning to the Gaylord/Johannesburg area. Ben was married to Elenore for twenty-seven years prior to her death in 1992. He lived in Johannesburg and was "companion" to Ilah Dowker for seventeen years prior to her death in 2009. Ben remained in Johannesburg with his beloved dog, "Katie" for the past two years. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish, hunt, and collect rocks. He was self-employed for over fifty years as a siding contractor. He also loved the Detroit Tigers and all the Johannesburg high school sports teams, especially the "Lady Cardinals" basketball team. He is survived by his sister, Virginia McCaffrey of North Bangor, NY; step daughter, Joanne Wobrock of Waters, MI; stepson, Gary (Chris) Wobrock of Londonderry, NH; Ilah's children, Betty Mae (Gary) Buchanan of Ortonville, MI; Dale (Cheryl) Dowker of Johannesburg, MI; and Dawn Aidsthorpe of Johannesburg, MI; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, who knew him as "Papa." He will be greatly missed. As were his wishes, cremation has taken place and he will be laid to rest beside his wife, Elenore in the Fairview Cemetery in Mancelona, MI.
