Alger Pete Swartout Alger Pete Swartout, age 86, of Atlanta, MI, passed away on July 30, 2014 at Alpena Regional Medical Center surrounded by those who loved him. He was born to John Swartout and Anna (Pate) Swartout on March 18, 1928 in St. Clair County, Michigan. In his early years, he came to the Atlanta area, where he remained ever since. When he was younger, Alger had his own car washing and detailing business, which he took great pride in, keeping many Atlanta residents' vehicles in pristine shape. He enjoyed walking through town making his rounds, visiting with his many friends at area businesses, and spending time in Briley Township Park. He was the "Town Greeter," waving at and sharing a smile with everyone who passed by. Alger looked forward to the Montmorency County Fair and Elk Festival each year, and would spend as much time at each of those events as was possible, visiting with old friends, and making new friends, as no one was a stranger to him. He loved holidays and parties, as he would get to spend time with his closest friends and caregivers. He enjoyed attending the Atlanta Bible Church each week and looked forward to their potluck dinners, as he always loved a good meal. Though Alger faced many challenges throughout his life, he made the best of them and always had a smile on his face and a laugh to share. He will be greatly missed by all of those who knew and loved him, and those who considered him to be a part of their families. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, August 8 at the Atlanta Bible Church. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., with the service to follow at noon. A luncheon will be held in the church basement following the service. Inurnment will be at Briley Township Cemetery.
