Mel began his career at the University of Michigan where he earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1959. Following two years serving as a U.S. Navy Dental Officer, Mel began his private dental practice in Atlanta, Michigan and later continued his practice in Merritt Island, Florida. Mel then left private practice and pursued a career in public health dentistry. Mel became the Dental Director for Brevard County Health Department (FL) and then furthered his education by earning a Master's of Public Health in 1971 from John Hopkins University and a Doctorate of Public Health, specializing in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in 1973, also from John Hopkins University. Continuing his dedication to public health dentistry, Mel became a dental consultant with the Florida Department of Health and the U.S. Public Health Service Division of Dental Health. During this period, Mel also served on the faculty of the University of Florida School of Dentistry as an Assistant Professor, the University of South Florida School of Public Health as an adjunct Professor and the Florida State University School of Education as an adjunct Professor of Epidemiology, Research and Study Design, and Measurement Theory. Mel was also an accomplished scientist, conducting research on the epidemiology of dental caries and oral disease and performing community trials on the efficacy of fluorides, both systemic and topical. Mel then completed his career as the State Public Health Dental Director for the State of Florida Division of Health. Mel loved to travel and pursued this passion to many regions of the world, enjoyed fishing, particularly in warmer weather, and had a love/hate relationship with golf.
